The Hohe Tauern National Park
Wild primordial landscape and mountain farming cultural landscape - These are the two guises of the National Park Hohe Tauern. Spanning an area of 1834 km² it is by far the largest nature conservation area in the entire Alps. The conservation area spans extensive primordial Alpine landscapes which includes glaciers, cliff faces and grasslands, and Alpine landscapes that have been carefully and painstakingly tended for centuries.
The Hohe Tauern National Park was established in 1981 and is therefore Austria’s first National Park. During the years that followed, the conservation areas, which incorporate the three federal states of Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol, have become the largest protected natural area in the Alps in terms of surface area.
