Climbing & Via ferrata paths

Via ferrata paths are ideal for anyone who wants to do more than just explore Salzburg's mountains on wide paths. The arranged routes proceed through steep and spectacular crags. Equipped with fixed steel cables, rungs and ladders, you get to experience what it is like climbing higher and higher in steep rock faces. Heading down to the bottom or up to a summit.

In much the same way as ‘proper’ climbing, they are graded according to difficulty level. These range from A for children and beginners, to D/E for real professional via ferrata climbers. Whereas the easy routes can be tackled by almost anyone without much effort, those in category D/E need a good helping of arm and leg strength and the requisite expertise. Yet the panoramic and and views to the depths below from a via ferrata route are all the more tremendous.

Kürsingersteig and Schmucksteig in Obersulzbachtal (B) in Neukirchen

Kürsingersteig was established in 2011 to provide visitors to Kürsingerhütte with a bit of variety on the route up to the inn. So you can climb up the really rewarding glacier trail (the former glacier stands are recorded on boards) to the glacier lake and then do the rest of the climb up to the inn on the via ferrata.. The via ferrata can be combined with the altitude tour to the Großvenediger. From the inn you can enjoy a lovely view to the glacier and the Großvenediger.

Access to the via ferrata:
From the valley station for the goods cable lift, follow the glacier trail up to the glacier lake at "Türkischen Zeltstadt" (‘Turkish Tent City’). At the banks of the lake, cross the bridge and ascend to the entrance point for the via ferrata (large identification point).

Please note: only climbable for those who have via ferrata experience and the relevant equipment!

The crags are south-facing. The ‘Augustwarte’ and ‘Luftballon’ sectors are shaded by the trees, which is
lovely in the summer. It is even possible to climb the ‘Mai’ and ‘Panorama’ sectors on sunny winter days.
The Falkenstein faces offer primarily steep ledge climbing. It is somewhat splintered in sections.
